The most beautiful thing about this scene is that when she says ‘maybe if you and I had met first’, he KNOWS they did, and he’s DYING to tell her, but he doesn’t. She’s chosen Stefan and not him, so he keeps quiet so that she can be happy. The irony is that while she’s telling him she cares about him so she’ll let him go, in reality, he’s doing the same to her.
And think about it: do you think he didn’t stick around in the shadows, the same way Stefan did? The difference is that while Damon was on the down-low, letting Elena live a normal, human life, Stefan interfered. It’s no coincidence that Damon ‘comes to town’ right when Stefan starts meddling in Elena’s life: he was already there.
So to everyone who gives Damon crap about doing what he wants while Stefan gives Elena what she wants, watch this episode again.
